More in our how to clean a house.
The first thing to check
Find out whether the glass has a protective coating and what care it needs. The cleaner must also suit nearby frames, seals, tiles and stone.
Get your shower-glass cleaning kit ready
Remove bottles and loose items so you can reach the bottom corners. Open the bathroom window or use its ventilation, and keep the floor clear so you have a steady place to stand.
- A clean, soft microfibre cloth or non-abrasive sponge.
- A cleaner permitted by the shower or coating manufacturer.
- A shower hose or jug for rinsing.
- A clean squeegee and a separate dry cloth.
- Gloves and any eye protection specified on the product label.
Use one cleaning product at a time. Do not mix products or add bleach to another cleaner. Keep children and pets away while the product is being used and the floor is wet.
How to clean shower glass, step by step
- Check and test. Read the glass and product instructions. Test a small, inconspicuous area if the care guidance permits it, including checking that overspray will not affect nearby finishes.
- Apply the cleaner. Use the label's quantity and application method. Cover a manageable section rather than allowing product to dry across the whole screen.
- Allow the stated contact time. A cleaner may need time to soften residue. Use the label's timing, then gently wipe with a soft cloth. More pressure is not a substitute for the right product.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove product and loosened residue, including along the lower edge. Direct water into the shower rather than over the bathroom floor.
- Remove the water. Use overlapping squeegee passes, then dry the edges and remaining droplets with the clean cloth.
Check the result once the glass is dry. Wet glass can hide a remaining film. If it still looks cloudy, identify the type of mark before repeating the process.
Removing soap scum from shower glass
Soap residue often feels like a film and may improve with a suitable shower cleaner. A chalky mark can be a mineral deposit. A stubborn cloudy patch can also involve surface deterioration, which ordinary cleaning will not repair.
| What you notice | Useful next step |
|---|---|
| A greasy or smeary film | Check that the approved cleaner is intended for soap residue, rinse fully and use a fresh drying cloth. |
| Chalky spots remain after washing | Ask the shower or coating supplier which deposit-removal product is compatible. |
| A cloudy patch does not change | Stop repeated scrubbing and have the glass assessed before using stronger products. |
| Streaks appear as it dries | Check for leftover cleaner, a dirty cloth or water left at the edges. |
Vinegar, abrasive pads and coated glass
A homemade vinegar mixture is not suitable for every shower. Acidic products can conflict with coating instructions and affect nearby natural stone. Scouring powders, abrasive pads, razors and metal scrapers can also damage a surface or its treatment.
For an unidentified coating, start by finding the care information. Keep the method gentle rather than testing a succession of stronger household recipes. Never mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaning chemicals.
Frames and seals need their own care. Wipe accessible edges gently without pulling seals out or dismantling the door. A damaged seal, loose fitting or leak needs repair advice, not harder cleaning.
Keep cleaning shower glass manageable
After showering, remove water with the squeegee and leave the bathroom ventilated. Keep the tool close enough to use without reaching across a slippery floor. A short routine is easier than allowing layers of residue to accumulate.
Check for film during your regular bathroom clean and deal with it before it becomes a heavier job. Add surrounding surfaces to your bathroom cleaning checklist, keeping toilet cloths separate from glass cloths.
If the bathroom needs a thorough reset, compare deep cleaning and regular cleaning. Tell us about the shower finish and the marks that concern you when requesting help.
Your questions, answered
Can I clean shower glass without vinegar?
Yes. Use a shower cleaner that the glass or coating manufacturer permits, follow its label and rinse thoroughly. Finish with a clean squeegee and dry cloth.
Why does shower glass still look cloudy after cleaning?
There may be remaining soap film, mineral deposits or a change to the glass surface. Check the dry result and seek product or glass-care advice before using a stronger cleaner.
Should I use the same cloth on the whole bathroom?
Keep toilet-cleaning cloths separate. Use a clean cloth for the glass and another for drying so residue is not spread back over the screen.
