Window cleaning tips for your home

Clean windows need attention to the glass, the edges and the dirt around the frame. Start with a safe working position and products that suit the glazing and frame finish.

A useful order

Remove loose dirt from accessible frames and tracks before washing the glass. Work on a manageable section, remove the cleaning water and finish the edges with a clean cloth.

Window cleaning tips: get the kit ready

Have clean microfibre cloths, a soft brush and a suitable squeegee ready before you start. Dirty cloths and a worn or gritty blade can make a clean pane look streaky again.

Choose a cleaner approved for your glass, coatings and surrounding finishes. Keep metal scrapers and abrasive pads away from the glazing unless the manufacturer has provided a specific method for their use.

Wash the glass without chasing streaks

Work out of strong direct sun where practical so the cleaning solution does not dry before you remove it. Wash the accessible pane, use smooth overlapping squeegee strokes and wipe the blade between passes. Finish the edges with a dry, lint-free cloth.

For the detailed sequence and troubleshooting, see window cleaning without streaks. A mark between sealed panes needs a different assessment from dirt on an accessible surface.

Include frames, sills and tracks in your plan

Loose grit becomes muddy when water is added. Brush or vacuum it away first, then use a controlled amount of cleaning water on a cloth. Keep drainage openings clear without poking tools into parts you cannot identify.

Our window-track cleaning guide covers corners, sills and the point where a sticking or leaking window needs repair advice.

Choose a safe time and working position

Wind and awkward access can turn a small job into a difficult one. Stay on a stable surface, keep both feet securely supported and leave high or hard-to-reach glazing for an appropriate assessment.

Inspect exposed windows more often when salt, dust or weather leaves visible deposits. Follow the joinery manufacturer's maintenance interval, especially near the coast, and tell us about access before arranging a Wellington window clean.

Start here

  1. Solve everyday glass streaks.
  2. Clear accessible tracks and sills.
  3. Discuss a window-cleaning quote.

When you enquire, describe the number of windows, storeys, internal and external access, and any frames or tracks you want included. A photo can help explain an awkward pane before we agree the work.
