A kitchen that feels cared for

Cleaning kitchen cupboards, inside and out

Work on one cupboard at a time. Use a soft cloth and a cleaner suited to the finish, keep moisture away from edges and hinges, and dry shelves before putting food or dishes back.

Separate the two jobs

Cupboard fronts collect fingerprints and cooking residue. Interiors need emptying, crumb removal and drying time. Plan them separately so a quick wipe does not become an unfinished kitchen.

Check kitchen cabinet doors before choosing a cleaner

Melamine, painted doors, veneer, solid timber and high-gloss coatings can look similar but need different care. Find the supplier's instructions where possible. If you do not know the finish, start gently and avoid solvents or abrasive products.

Look at the lower edges, sink-side panels and joins for swelling, lifting film or chipped paint. These are places where more moisture may make a problem worse. Cleaning will not repair a delaminating edge.

How to clean kitchen cupboard fronts

  1. Clear the work area. Move food and small appliances away from the doors you are cleaning.
  2. Prepare a soft cloth. Use the supplier-approved product at its stated dilution. Apply it to the cloth where the care instructions permit, rather than soaking the door.
  3. Test discreetly. Wipe a small area and let it dry to check the finish before continuing.
  4. Wipe from top to bottom. Work with light strokes, paying attention around handles and along accessible edges.
  5. Remove residue. Use a fresh, damp cloth if the instructions call for rinsing.
  6. Dry the panel. Finish edges and joins carefully, then check for smears in the light.

Do not transfer a stain-removal method for one laminate product onto an unknown painted or veneered door. Even products sold as natural can be unsuitable for a particular finish.

Dealing with greasy cupboard doors

Grease near the hob can trap dust and become sticky. Use a cleaner the door supplier approves for that residue, allowing its stated contact time. Work in small sections so loosened dirt is lifted into the cloth instead of spread across the panel.

If the cloth is saturated with residue, change it. Adding more product without removing the dirty solution can leave a film. Do not reach for oven cleaner, a scouring powder or a strong solvent as a general cupboard treatment.

A persistent tacky surface may be more than ordinary dirt. If the approved gentle method changes the colour or sheen, stop and ask the cabinet supplier about the finish.

Cleaning inside kitchen cupboards and drawers

Empty one section onto a clean surface. Keep food closed and check for leaking packets or sticky containers before they go back. Take a quick photo if you want to restore the same arrangement.

  • Remove loose crumbs with a soft brush or vacuum attachment that will not mark the shelf.
  • Wipe the shelf and accessible inner walls using the permitted method.
  • Lift old liners only if they can be removed without damaging the surface.
  • Dry corners and let the space finish drying before restocking.
  • Wipe sticky container bases so the newly cleaned shelf stays clean.

Leave heavy shelves and fitted hardware in place unless you know the removal procedure. Report leaks, damaged boards or pest activity rather than covering the problem with a fresh liner.

Fit cupboard cleaning into a kitchen reset

Wipe fresh spills promptly using the approved method, and check handles during your regular kitchen clean. Choose a small section of interiors for occasional attention instead of emptying every cupboard when you have limited time.

Our kitchen cleaning checklist helps put the tasks in order. If you are clearing storage before a grocery shop, it can also be a useful time to clean the fridge.

When asking us for help, distinguish fronts from interiors and tell us what will be emptied. Include the material or care sheet if you have it so we can discuss the job accurately.

Your questions, answered

Can I use vinegar on kitchen cupboard doors?

Only if the cabinet supplier permits it for that finish. A vinegar recipe is not a universal alternative to the recommended cleaner, especially around coatings, timber and adjoining stone.

Why do cupboards still look smeary after cleaning?

Check for excess product or a cloth carrying grease from another area. Remove residue using the finish's approved rinse method and dry with a clean soft cloth.

Do I need to empty cupboards before a cleaner comes?

Agree which interiors are included when arranging the clean. If an interior is part of the scope, discuss what you will empty and where the contents can safely stay.
