For an ordinary fresh spill
Lift loose solids gently, then blot liquid with a clean white cloth. Work towards the centre without scrubbing. Check your carpet’s own care instructions before adding water or a cleaning product.
Take a moment to identify what you are treating
Keep people and pets away from the affected area while you assess it. Note what was spilled, when it happened and whether you have already applied anything. Check the carpet label, invoice or care guide for the fibre and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Keep the product container or a photo of its label if a cleaner has already been used. That information is useful even when the mark looks unchanged. For an unknown spill or a carpet with missing care information, ask for advice before trying a stronger treatment.
| What you know | Useful next step |
|---|---|
| Fresh food or drink spill | Remove loose material and blot liquid, then check the carpet’s stain guidance. |
| An old or unknown mark | Record its location and appearance before applying another product. |
| A product has already been used | Keep the name, dilution and result with your notes. |
| The carpet fibre is unknown | Look for care information or ask the supplier to identify it. |
Remove the spill without working it deeper
- Gently lift solid material with a spoon, taking care not to press it into the pile.
- Use a clean white cloth or white paper towel to absorb liquid.
- Blot from the outer edge towards the centre and move to a clean part of the cloth as needed.
- Keep rubbing and scrubbing out of the process so the pile is not distorted.
These first steps are for ordinary household spills. A large water incident, an unknown chemical or a damaged carpet needs an appropriate assessment rather than repeated spot cleaning.
Choose the next step for this carpet
Follow the carpet manufacturer’s directions for the particular spill and fibre. If a suitable product is recommended, follow its label and test it as directed in an inconspicuous area first. Keep added moisture controlled and follow the specified rinsing and drying steps.
Wool and synthetic carpets can have different care requirements. A recipe that worked elsewhere is not a reliable reason to use it on this carpet. Keep to one suitable method and stop if colour, texture or the mark changes unexpectedly.
For a wider clean, our carpet cleaning in Wellington service starts with the room list, carpet information and concerns you want assessed. Mention the spill history when you enquire.
Use a clear stopping point
If the mark remains after the appropriate care steps, stop adding treatments and talk it through with us. Tell us if the area feels different, the colour has changed or the mark returns as the carpet dries. Those observations are more useful than a list of increasingly strong products.
- Photograph the whole area and a closer view of the mark.
- Write down the spill and the time it happened, if known.
- List every product or treatment already used.
- Include any carpet label or care instructions.
- Describe whether the mark has spread, changed or returned.
A mark that returns can have a different explanation from new dirt. Share what you observed and when it happened so the next assessment begins with a complete history.
A simple spill note
“The spill is beside the lounge sofa and happened yesterday evening. We lifted the loose material and blotted the liquid with a white cloth. We have not used a cleaning product. The care label is attached, along with a wider room photo and a close-up. Please advise on an assessment.”
Add your suburb and the rooms involved if you would like a cleaning quote. Our carpet-cleaning preparation guide can help you organise furniture and access once the work has been discussed.
Keep the same note if another household member speaks to us. A shared record prevents important details, such as a previous treatment, from being lost between conversations.
Your questions, answered
Should I scrub a carpet stain?
Use a blotting action for an ordinary liquid spill. Rubbing or scrubbing can distort the pile and spread the affected area.
Is one homemade cleaner suitable for every carpet?
Choose the method from your carpet’s care instructions and the product label. Fibre, finish and the type of spill all affect what is suitable.
What if the stain does not come out?
Stop adding products and send us the carpet information, photos and treatment history. We’ll discuss the concern and an appropriate assessment.
