Plan the visit and the time after

Prepare for carpet cleaning, room by room

A carpet-cleaning visit affects more than the floor. Plan a route through the home, agree furniture responsibilities and ask how the rooms should be used while the carpet dries.

A clear place to start

Remove small loose items, agree what happens to furniture and get aftercare advice for the actual carpet and method. Do not assume a universal drying time.

Before the visit: make a room plan

List the rooms to be cleaned and where people need to go during the work. If every route passes through the same carpeted hallway, explain that before the appointment. The cleaner can discuss the sequence and any limits on room use.

  • Pick up clothing, toys and other loose floor items.
  • Set aside fragile belongings rather than leaving them on furniture that might move.
  • Ask what furniture the team can move, clean around or leave in place.
  • Identify the carpet type if known and keep care information available.
  • Point out marks, previous treatments and existing damage.
  • Confirm parking, entry and the route to each room.

Ask the drying questions before making plans

Online drying estimates describe other jobs and other providers. Ask the team what affects your carpet and what to do after its chosen method. The aim is to avoid moving furniture or scheduling a busy evening before the rooms are ready.

Question to askWhat you can plan
When can people walk through?Alternative routes and which rooms to use meanwhile.
When can furniture return?Where movable items can stay until the advised time.
What ventilation is suitable? How to follow advice while keeping the home secure.
What about pets and children?A separate area away from the work and drying carpet.
What if it still feels damp?Who to contact before changing the plan or replacing furniture.

After the clean: follow the specific advice

Keep the cleaner’s instructions handy and use the recommended return-to-use plan. Manufacturer care information also matters: Godfrey Hirst’s wool guidance cautions against methods that can damage fibres or leave too much moisture. That does not establish the method suitable for every carpet.

  • Confirm the aftercare instructions before the team leaves.
  • Keep the agreed areas clear for as long as advised.
  • Ask before replacing furniture if the carpet is still damp.
  • Report concerns with the room and condition clearly described.
  • For a move, allow the carpet plan to guide when boxes and furniture arrive.

Make it practical

An example to adapt

“The lounge and hallway are being cleaned, and the hallway is our only route to the bedrooms. Please advise the room order, what furniture we should move beforehand, when we can use the route again and what to do if the carpet is still damp when the furniture delivery is due.”

A few helpful details

Do I need to vacuum beforehand?

Ask what preparation is included in the agreed service. Do not assume another provider’s instructions apply to this visit.

Can I rely on a drying time from a search result?

Use advice for the actual job. Carpet, method and conditions can differ, so a generic number should not determine your move or furniture delivery.
